25 cute teen suitcases. Young woman rolling a blue suitcase.

Are you looking for a cute suitcase for your teenager? Let’s face it, when you’re in high school or middle school the most important thing is fitting in with your friends and trying to keep up with the latest trends. These pieces of luggage offer both the style and functionality that your teen needs on their travels.

There’s no “one size fits all” solution for teen luggage. What they will need for a summer camping trip will vary greatly from a spring break trip to Mexico.

We’ll cover our favorite teen suitcases, carry on- bags and totes to make travel a breeze.

Types of Teen Luggage

Finding the best type of luggage for your teen can be a challenge. They want cute patterns and trendy designs. You want durable and inexpensive. Finding the right balance between function and fashion can be tricky.

Your teen’s luggage needs to fit not only clothing and accessories but also shoes and personal items like laptops, chargers and toiletries.

There are different types of luggage for teens that you can try:

  1. Hardshell Suitcase – This is a bag with a hard ABS plastic or polycarbonate frame. This waterproof and durable luggage can handle stress and scratches – though lacks some flexibility and can be a little heavier than other soft luggage. Cheap brands are also prone to cracking and damage from mishandling.
  2. Softside Suitcase – This type of luggage is made from durable fabric such as nylon. It has more ‘give’ and flexibility, and usually external pockets and expander zips for more optionality.
  3. Rucksack –The word “rucksack” is derived from the German, “der rücken,” meaning “the back.” A rucksack is a pack often used for camping or hiking, and a good one can be crafted of durable waxed canvas or technical material.
  4. Duffel Bag – A wide, cylindrical luggage with a top opening, a duffel bag is flexible and heavy-duty. It can carry bulky products easily but must be kept light enough it can still be carried over the shoulder (though some larger duffels also come with wheels).
  5. Travel Tote – This luggage, with straps for a single shoulder, is larger than regular totes. They are ideal for a few clothes and other essentials, though not great for long periods of carrying, best for short trips.
  6. Backpack – Most backpacks are waterproof, lightweight and flexible, and they provide maximum protection for the products inside them. Using a backpack also means that your belongings are kept closer to your body, making it difficult for thieves to steal.
  7. Carry-On Luggage – Suitcases, rucksacks, duffels, totes: anything that can fit in the overhead compartment of an airplane is considered carry-on luggage.
  8. Wheeled Luggage – All types of luggage can have wheels, even carry-on luggage and duffels. There are either one-directional wheels (usual 2-wheeled) or rotational wheels (4 wheeled). 4 independent spinner wheels are by far the most practical, but this can add to the cost and weight of the bag.

FAQ

What size is TSA approved carry on?

Your carry-on bag should fit in the overhead bin. The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 centimeters x 35 centimeters x 56 centimeters). This includes handles and wheels.

What happens if your carry on is too big?

If your carry-on is too large, you’ll have to pay to check it at the gate. You’ll find the exact rules for a large selection of airlines below, including specific size and weight limits. Take note: any handles and wheels on your bags count toward airlines’ size limits.

Can I use a duffel bag as a carry on?

As long as your duffle bag is within the airline’s size requirements for carry on luggage, you can use a duffle bag as a carry on item.

Can I bring two personal items on a plane?

Airlines don’t allow passengers to bring two or more personal items. The general rule of thumb when it comes to hand luggage is that you are only allowed to bring one small carry-on suitcase and one personal item, such as a tote, backpack, purse, or something similar.
